NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry College golf signed a pair of golfers to take the course for next season. These are the first signees for Head Coach Rusty Casey since his arrival this summer to the coaching staff.
The men’s team signed Martin Gasque (Holly Hill, S.C.) out of Holly Hill Academy last week. The high school senior averaged 37.8 strokes per nine holes for Holly Hill Academy last season. His team’s record is 48-6 during his first three years on the squad, winning the South Carolina Independent School Association State Championships in 2001 and runners-up in 2003. He was an all-region selection for five straight years and was selected to the 2001 All-State team. He was a medalist at the Fripp Island Tournament with a two-day score of 149 and was All-Tournament as the Junior Azalea in Charleston for three straight years. He has played on the varsity team at Holly Hill for five straight years. Gasque is also a success in the classroom, with a grade point average of 3.81.
The Lady Indians added Rachel Forbare (Chapin, S.C.) from Chapin High School to play next year. She was the 2000 City Junior Champion and runner-up in 2001. Forbare had a Top 10 finish at the 2002 Girls State Championship. She was All-Area for three seasons and All-State in 2002 and 2003. The 2003 graduate of Chapin will start in the spring semester to play this year for Newberry College.
“We’re extremely excited to have a couple of early commitments to our program,” said Coach Casey. “We expect great things in the future here at Newberry College with our men’s and women’s golf teams.”
