Newberry fifth after one day at St. Andrews

WAGRAM, NCó Newberry College is currently fifth after day one of the 12-team St. Andrews Fall Invitational, hosted by the St. Andrews Knights at the Deercroft Golf Club. The St. Andrews Presbyterian College menís golf team is leading the tournament. The Limestone women are winning the two-team womenís tournament being played at the same time on Deercroft. Newberry's lone female golfer this fall, freshman Stephanie Hemann (Brooklyn, Ohio) is currently sixth individually in the tournament.

           
For the men, the Indians shot a first round 320 (+32) on the 6,696-yard par-72 layout.

           
The Knights Sergej Dronov is in first place by two strokes in the 64-player field. Newberry's Jack Easterby (Columbia, S.C.) shot a five-over 76 to cram into a five-way tie for seventh place overall. Brian Phillips (Watertown, N.Y.) was one back with a 77, putting him in a two-way tie for 12th.

           
Limestone leads the small womenís tournament with a team 349 on the 5,853-yard par-72 course. Hemann put up an even 100 for her sixth place standing out of 14 participants.

           
Lindsey Snyder, playing as an individual for Mt. Olive, leads with a nine-over 81. Maggie Caron and Caroline Rankin of Limestone are tied in second place with 85ís.

           
The final round of the tournament will be played tomorrow with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
