AUSTIN, Texas – Newberry College junior guard James Stepp has been named to the 2017 Academic All-District Basketball Team, as announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Stepp carries a 3.72 cumulative grade-point average as a Biology major and is one of Newberry's top performers on the court this season. Stepp is one of six student-athletes across the Southeast Region to receive the honor that combines athletic achievement and academic excellence; to be eligible, student-athletes have at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA and appear in at least half of their team's contests.
The Greensboro, N.C., native is averaging 13.7 points per game and 2.9 rebounds per game. Stepp led the team in scoring in four games this season, recording a season-high 27 points against Lenoir-Rhyne (1/4) and Queens (11/22). Stepp also set a program record of nine made three pointers against L-R, according to available records.
The District three team includes NCAA Division II student-athletes from Conference Carolinas, the Peach Belt and the South Atlantic Conference and is comprised of six members. Academic All-District selections now advance to the national Academic All-America ballot.
Stepp and the Wolves (14-9, 9-8 SAC) will host No. 16 Lincoln Memorial (19-4, 14-3 SAC) Saturday at Noon.
