NEWBERRY – Newberry head men’s basketball coach Dave Davis announces the singings of CJ Wright and Wynston Andrews who both hail from Columbia.
Wright is the all-time leading scorer at Airport High School and Wynston Andrews made a state championship game appearance at Cardinal Newman.
“We have worked extremely hard recruiting the state of South Carolina since arriving in Newberry a few years back and it is starting to pay off,” remarked Davis. “These two guards bring skills, athleticism and a love of the game that give them both a chance to contribute, once they buy into the Newberry work ethic.”
Andrews played his final two seasons at Cardinal Newman and led his team to the state championship game where he was an All-Tournament selection. Wynston was selected to play in the Georgia vs. South Carolina All-Star Game. Cardinal Newman had two of its most successful seasons under head coach Phil Deter and were Co-Regional Champs this past season.
Wright is a four-year varsity player and has been named All-Region three times. In his senior season, CJ averaged 18.5 points, eight rebounds, 4.5 assists and two steals per game. He finished his Airport HS career with 1,300 points and participated in the 2017 Capital City All-Star Game. In the final game of his career, he poured in 36 points against South Aiken.
Wright was also a member of the football team and twice has been selected for the All-Region team. Airport head coach Jimmy Kinard said, “In my 23 years of coaching, CJ is one of the hardest playing athletes that I have ever had.”
