NEWBERRY – Xavier Holmes earned his second double-double in two games as the Wolves went on to beat Anderson 81-73 Saturday night at Eleazer Arena in a tough SAC game.
Newberry move to 7-3 overall while going to 2-2 in conference play. Anderson falls to 2-7 on the year and 1-2 in the SAC play.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Newberry shot 45.3% in the field and 29% from behind the arc while the Trojans shot 42% in the field and 30.4% from behind the arc.
- The Wolves forced 18 turnovers and grabbed nine steals.
- Xavier Holmes held team high with 23 points and 11 rebounds while taking two steals and two blocks.
- Brandon Taylor notched 12 points, eight boards, two assists and one steal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Newberry started off slow as they missed their first three shots. Brandon Taylor got the Wolves on the board with a jumper in the opening five minutes. Xavier Holmes hit back to back layups to put the Wolves up 6-1.
The Trojans fell behind early when D.J. Copeland hit a layup that put the Wolves up by 12 with the score at 15-3. Anderson closed the gap when Jeremy Bouton hit a three of his own to make the score 17-9. With about 10 minutes left in the first half Mitch Riggs hit two free throws to give the Wovles a 30-15 lead.
Brandont Tylor hit a three pointer to push their lead to 33-17 just two minutes later. With five minutes to go, Xavier Holmes hit a layup to go up 42-26. The Trojans closed the gap by the end of the first half to make the score 47-35.
Anderson started the second half hot as they came out and hit their first three out of their five shots. The Trojans closed the gap to four but Brandon Taylor hit a three to give the Wolves a 52-44 lead.
With ten minutes left in the game the Trojans Maurice Howard hit a layup to cut the gap to four once again with the score at 61-55. James Ashby hit a layup less than 30 seconds later. With five minutes left in the game, Tre’ Fields hit a layup to cut the gap again to two. Xavier Holmes then hit two free throws to go back up by four.
From that point on the Wolves never looked back and won the game 81-73.

- Newberry will be on the road on Wednesday December 16 as they will travel to Mars Hill to face the Lions.
