Wolves come up short against Bulldogs, 89-86

WINGATE, N.C. – Despite a double-double from senior Xavier Holmes, the Newberry Wolves couldn't find the decisive basket in a tight 89-86 South Atlantic Conference loss at Wingate on Tuesday evening.

Newberry falls to 6-3 overall while falling to 1-2 in conference play. Wingate moves up to 6-1 overall and a 2-1 record in conference play.


  • The Wolves shot 43.1%, going 31-of-72 from the field. The Wolves hit 10 three-pointers on 28 attempts.
  • Newberry’s leading scorer was Xavier Holmes with 21 points and 12 rebounds in 25 minutes of play.
  • Mitch Riggs scored 20 points, with James Ashby scoring 11 and Ronell Crockett scoring 10.
  • The Wolves struggled at the free throw line, connecting on only 46.7% (14-of-30) at the charity stripe.
  • The Bulldogs shot 48.3% from the field, going 29-60 (44%) from behind the arc and 66.7% at the free throw line.
  • Anthanee Doyle and Xavier Griffin were the Bulldogs' leading scorers with 17 points apiece.



The first half was mostly all Bulldogs as they led for 16 minutes during the half. The Wolves got on the board early as they were up 4-0 to start in the opening two minutes. Xavier Holmes had the first eight points for the Wolves to open the game when the Bulldogs bounced back to take a 10-8 lead in the opening five minutes.

Zeriq Loar hit a three pointer to put the Bulldogs up 13-8 and then a couple free throws from Lee Mccall to go up 15-8. James Ashby brought the Wolves back into the game with a three of his own to cut the lead to 15-11. Mitch Riggs then hit a three right after a Ronell Crockett layup to pull the Wolves within three. The Bulldogs hit back to back baskets after that with a layup and a three by Anthanee Doyle.

The Wolves were down 24-16 when Holmes went to the line for two free throws. Holmes knocked them both down to pull with six. Josh Dominguez hit a three to put the Bulldogs back up 10 with about eight minutes left in the half. The Wolves started to bounce back when Brandon Taylor hit a three to pull back within six. With about six minutes left in the first half Mason Spease joined the action with a three of his own and James Stepp hit a three to pull within two.

Bryan Rouse hit a three for the Bulldogs to go back up by five with about four minutes left. The Wolves closed the gap again with a Ashby three pointer to make the score 40-37 with just over a minute left in the first half. The Bulldogs didn’t score in the final two minutes of the first half. The Bulldogs went for a final shot of the half when Keith Griffin missed a wide open layup. The score was 41-37 going into the break.


The second half started with Anthanee Doyle hitting a three and stretching their lead to six. The Wolves got on the board about two minutes into the half when Stepp hit a layup. Crockett hit a layup about a minute later to cut the Bulldogs lead to four. Mike Baez came right back down the floor to hit a jumper for the Bulldgos and made the score 48-42. Taylor hit the next basket for the Wolves and cut the lead back down to four.

With about 15 minutes left in the game Zeriq Lolar made a layup to put the Bulldogs up by seven. The Wolves stayed strong on both ends of the floor. Gerald Evans hit both of his free throws after Xavier Griffin fouled him while he was going up for a layup. Newberry pulled within four when Taylor hit a layup and a free throw. The Bulldogs took a 61-53 lead before Crockett hit both of his free throws. Zeriq Lolar made a layup to put the Bulldgos up by seven with about 11 minutes remaining in the game.

The Bulldogs started to stretch their lead with a pair of free throws by Xavier Griffin to make the score 72-63. The Wolves got a layup by Mitch Riggs to cut the score to 72-65. The Bulldogs went up by 11 when Zeriq Lolar hit a jumper but Riggs came right back down the floor to hit a three to make the score 76-68 with just under eight minutes to go in the game. Stepp fouled out of the game on a weak charging foul with 7:32 remaining in the game. Riggs was on a mission to bring the Wolves back into the game with a jumper in the paint to cut the lead to eight.

With five minutes to go Riggs hit a layup to pull the Wolves back within six. Spease hit a three with 2:30 left in the game to pull the Wolves within one. Xavier Griffin turned the ball over late in the second half which gave the Wolves possession. Mike Baez knocked down both free throws with under a minute to go as the Bulldogs were up 86-63. Xavier Griffin hit a layup with 20 seconds left on the clock and made his free throw to take a 89-85 lead. 8.7 seconds left in the game, the Wolves were down by three and had the ball. Evans got two decent good looks at a three in the final seconds, but both fell short.   

Spease grabbed five rebounds in the final minute of the game to give the Wolves a great chance. Spease said "I just try to leave all I have out on the court and go as hard as I possibly can every minute that I'm in the game to give our team the best chance to win."


-   Newberry will be home on Saturday, December 12, as the Wolves will tip off at 4 p.m. against the Trojans of Anderson.
