NEWBERRY - Newberry College men's basketball player Mitch Riggs has been named the Chick-fil-A of Ballentine Newberry College Student-Athlete of the Month for November 2015, as announced by the athletic department Thursday.
Riggs, a senior from Langwarrin, Victoria, Australia, has been a constant for the Wolves in a 5-2 start to the season, averaging 11.9 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. He scored in double digits in five of the seven games so far, as well as the exhibition upset win at Division I Marshall. He scored 25 points in the win over Washington Adventist.
Riggs was the 2014-15 South Atlantic Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year, a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, Division II Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award winner and named to the NABC Honors Court. He currently carries a 3.71 grade point average and is also completing student teaching requirements and participating in multiple community service activities.
"Mitch has performed exceptionally well and has been an outstanding leader in our young season, especially considering the many obligations he has in the most important part of his academic career," said head men's basketball coach Dave Davis.
The Chick-fil-A Ballentine Newberry College Student-Athlete of the Month award will be given every month and honor one Newberry College student-athlete for their athletic performance, academic achievement and community involvement. The award recipient will be honored on the new Chick-fil-A Newberry College Student-Athlete of the Month wall in Eleazer Arena as well as at the Newberry College Wolfies award show in April.
