Newberry alumnus Aegir Steinarsson to represent Iceland in FIBA Eurobasket tournament

REYKJAVIK, Iceland - On Tuesday, the Icelandic Basketball Federation (KKI) announced the 12-man roster for the national team which will represent their nation at the FIBA Eurobasket 2015 championship. Former Newberry star Aegir Steinarsson has made the team and will once again represent his country at the senior national team level.

In his latest international action, Steinarsson led the 2015 Games of the Small States of Europe with 6.7 assists per game. In his professional career, Steinarsson is currently a star for the Sundsvall Dragons in Sweden.

Iceland's preparation for the Eurobasket tournament starts this weekend with a three-game friendly tour in Poland. Iceland plays hosts Poland on Friday, Lebanon on Saturday and Belgium on Sunday.

Iceland is in a very strong group in the Eurobasket tournament, with all of its games played in Berlin, Germany. On Saturday, September 5, Iceland goes against host nation Germany and Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki. Sunday, September 6, sees Iceland take on Italy, followed by a day off.

On Tuesday, September 8, Iceland goes up against Serbia, followed by Spain on Wednesday, September 9, and Turkey on Thursday, September 10.

Following the group stages, the tournament moves to Lille, France, for the placement/classification stages. The top two teams in the tournament automatically qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The third through seventh place teams then go into one of three Olympic Qualifying Tournaments.
