Newberry welcomes Catawba for quarterfinal contest

NEWBERRY - After a defeat in the regular season finale at Carson-Newman on Saturday, the Newberry College men's basketball team earned the No. 3 seed in the SAC Conference Championship and will host the Catawba College Indians at 8 p.m. inside Eleazer Arena.

The Wolves dropped the regular season finale 89-82 to Carson-Newman on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles used a 7-0 run over the final 2:30 of the game to put away any hopes for a Newberry win. Brandon Taylor (Coshocton, Ohio) led the Scarlet and Gray with 15 pointns and seven rebounds. Mitch Riggs (Langwarrin, Vic., Australia) and Demarkus Smith (Johnston, S.C.) each tallied 14 points on the afternoon.

Smith leads the way offensively for Newberry with 16.9 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. He also contributes 2.3 assists per outing. Taylor pulls down a team-high 4.9 rebounds and pours in an average of 10.2 points per game. Riggs also adds double digit points with 12.7 per game to go along with his 3.7 rebounds per game average. Dondray Walker (Fountain Inn, S.C.) contributes 12.2 points per game and 3.4 rebounds per appearance.

Catawba receives scoring in double digits from three different players. KJ Arrington leads the way with 17.7 points per game while freshman teammate Jerrin Morrison adds 15.5 points per outing. Rakeen Brown also pours in double digit scoring with 15.4 points per appearance. Arrington adds 6.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game and Brown adds 3.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists per outing. The Wolves swept Catawba on the season by scores of 108-101 and 109-98. 

The winner of Wednesday evening's contest will travel to Furman's Timmons Arena on March 7 for the semifinals versus the winner of the Coker and Carson-Newman quarterfinal contest.
