NEWBERRY - The Newberry College men's basketball team closes out their home portion of the 2014-15 campaign on Wednesday evening as they host the Wingate Bulldogs at 8 p.m. inside Eleazer Arena.

Last time out the Wolves defeated Mars Hill 79-70 on senior day inside Eleazer Arena. The win was the Wolves' fourth win in a row and 18th overall on the year. Demarkus Smith (Johnston, S.C.) led the way with 20 points on 7-of-18 shooting and snagged eight rebounds. Xavier Holmes (Great Falls, S.C.) had another stellar performance, adding 19 points on 9-of-10 shooting. Holmes also brought down four rebounds. Holmes' performance against Mars Hill and at Queens during the midweek contest earned him SAC Player of the Week honors, announced on Monday. Mitch Riggs (Langawarrin, Vic, Australia) and Brandon Taylor (Coshocton, Ohio) both added double digit point totals, 15 and 12 respectively.

On the season, Smith leads the Wolves with 16.8 points per game as well as 4.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists per outing. Taylor leads the team with 4.7 rebounds and nets 9.9 points per contest. Riggs is second on the team in scoring at 12.9 points per game while pulling down 3.7 rebounds.

Earlier this season Wingate defeated Newberry 78-76 inside Cuddy Arena. They are led by Ryan Daye who tallies 13.6 points per game. Xavier Griffin adds 10.7 points per matchup and adds 3.0 rebounds. Isiah Cureton and Keith Griffin pace the way on the glass, averaging 6.7 and 5.9 rebounds respectively. Wingate and Newberry are tied for second place in the South Atlantic Conference.

Newberry concludes the regular season at Carson-Newman on February 28 at 4 p.m. If the Wolves finish a top four seed after Saturday, they will host a first round contest inside Eleazer Arena.
