Newberry seeking fourth-straight win on Saturday

NEWBERRY - On Saturday afternoon the Newberry College men's basketball team hosts the Mars Hill Lions inside Eleazer Arena at 4 p.m. for senior day as the Wolves honor their two men's basketball seniors, Dondray Walker and Demarkus Smith.

Last time out, the Wolves defeated the Queens Royals 90-85 to earn the season sweep over the team from the Queen City. Xavier Holmes tied a career-high with 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting while snagging six rebounds. Four other Wolves recorded double figures in the win on Wednesday evening. The win propels Newberry to its third straight victory for its first three-game winning streak since early January, a span of 15 games.

The Wolves are led by Smith who pours in 16.6 points per game along with 4.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists per outing. Brandon Taylor snags 4.7 rebounds a game along with a 9.8 points per game average in the Scarlet and Gray. Mitch Riggs adds 12.9 points a night on 43.8% shooting while dishing out 2.8 assists an evening.

On Wednesday evening the Wolves welcome a Mars Hill Lions team that sits at 10-14 overall and 5-13 in South Atlantic Conference play. The previous meeting saw the Wolves post a remarkable comeback in their 108-100 victory. They are led by Michael Carson with 13.1 points per game along with his 15 steals on the campaign. Isaiah Cuthbertson leads the Lions with 8.5 rebounds per game while he tallies 11.0 points per game. Mars Hill sits 10th in the conference at 66.8% from the floor and 10th from 3-point land at 33.6%. They average the 7th best turnover amount at 14.3 per game while averaging 13.9 assists a game.

Following Saturday afternoon's game, the Wolves host the Wingate Bulldogs on February 25 inside Eleazer Arena before concluding the regular season at Carson-Newman on February 28.
