Wolves travel to Wingate on Wednesday

NEWBERRY - On Wednesday evening the Newberry College men's basketball team travels to Wingate University for a South Atlantic Conference matchup against the Bulldogs inside Cuddy Arena with tipoff scheduled for 8 p.m.

Last time out the Wolves lost to the Anderson Trojans on Saturday afternoon 81-78. Gerald Evans led by sides with 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting including 6-of-9 from beyond the arc. James Stepp contributed 15 points and Demarkus Smith added 11 points as the only other Wolves in double figures.

Newberry has had recent hiccups as they've dropped five of its last six contests while dropped its last three on the road. The Wolves continue to be led by senior Demarkus Smith who tallies 16.7 points per game and 4.4 rebounds per game, both team highs. Mitch Riggs pours in 12.1 points per game to go along with his 3.4 rebounds per game. He also has 2.9 steals per contest which is second best for the Scarlet and Gray.

Wednesday's matchup is the first on the year between Wingate and Newberry. They'll meet again in three weeks on February 25 in Newberry at 8 p.m. The Bulldogs are led by Ryan Daye who contributes 13.9 points per game and Isiah Cureton's 10.4 points per game and 6.7 rebounds per contest. Xavier Griffin dishes out 3.1 assists and tallies 9.8 points per game.

Following tonight's matchup Newberry returns home to face No. 1 ranked Lincoln Memorial on February 7, which is Mid-Carolina High School Day.
