WICHITA, Kan. - Following a pair of losses this week, the Newberry College men's basketball team has fallen three spots into a tie for seventh place in the most recent D2SIDA Regional Poll released on Monday afternoon.
In their midweek contest, the Wolves fell 92-86 to conference rival the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears. Demarkus Smith tallied 24 points including a perfect 5-of-5 from beyond the arc. Newberry shot 29-of-68 from the floor while Lenoir-Rhyne shot a blistering 59.6 percent from the field to go along with 23-of-26 from the charity stripe. The loss was Newberry's second on the campaign and second in conference.
Saturday afternoon the Wolves took on the Tornados of Brevard College inside Boshamer Gymnasium. Earlier in the season, Newberry defeated Brevard inside Eleazer Arena 101-72. In the rematch Brevard connected on 11 more shots from long distance than the previous meeting, which proved to be the difference maker. With time ticking down in the second half Phil Wallace buried a last-second 3-point shot as Newberry fell for the second consecutive game, 97-96.
The Wolves seek to get back on the winning track as they return to the friendly confines to host the Coker Cobras on Wednesday January 21 at 8 p.m.
