ROCK HILL – The South Atlantic Conference has named senior guard Demarkus Smith (Johnston, S.C) the AstroTurf Men’s Basketball Player of the Week during the January 5-11 game week. This is the first honor for Smith and the Newberry College men’s basketball team this season.
Smith averaged 26.0 points per game during the two game span, including a career-high 27 points in Newberry’s 108-100 overtime victory at Mars Hill on Saturday afternoon. In that contest he also tallied a career-high eight rebounds, added two assists and one steal. He shot 9-of-14 from the field and was 9-of-11 at the free throw line in 26 minutes of play.
At the mid-week contest home against Catawba, Smith tallied 25 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor while connecting on 11-of-14 at the charity stripe. He snagged seven rebounds and had one steal.
Smith looks to continue his success as he and the Wolves travel to Hickory, North Carolina to face-off against conference foe, Lenoir-Rhyne with tipoff scheduled for 8 p.m.
