Newberry travels to Mars Hill on Saturday

NEWBERRY - The Newberry College men's basketball team travels to Mars Hilll, North Carolina on Saturday to take on the Lions of Mars Hill University at 4 p.m. inside Stanford Arena.

Newberry improved to 12-1 with a 109-98 victory over the Catawba Indians. Brandon Taylor (21pts, career-high) and Demarkus Smith (25pts) led the way for the Wolves. Gerald Evans added 14 points and four rebounds along with seven assists and only one turnover.

Demarkus Smith leads the team with 14.7ppg along with Dondray Walker who is averaging 12.1ppg. Gerald Evans continues to lead the team with 4.4 rebounds per game and 3.6 assists per game as well as 24 steals on the year.

Mars Hill posts a 7-6 record on the year but only has two wins in conference play (at Coker 76-73, at Carson-Newman 84-73). They are led by Justin Yeargin with 14.8 points per game. Patrick Monroe is second with 12.3ppg and Isaiah Cutherbertson leads the team and conference with 8.8 rebounds per game as well as 10.2ppg. The Lions sit in 9th place in the South Atlantic Conference with a 2-5 conference record.

The Wolves travel to Lenoir-Rhyne next Wednesday January 14 and Brevard on January 17 before they begin a three-game homestand on January 21.
