NEWBERRY – The Newberry College men’s basketball team staved off the Tusculum Pioneers on Saturday afternoon 88-80 inside Eleazer Arena.
The Wolves (11-1, 5-1) were led by senior Demarkus Smith who tallied 26 points on 7-of-12 from the field and 9-of-12 from the charity stripe. Gerald Evans led both sides with 10 rebounds.
Coming out of halftime both squads battled back and forth for most of the second half as Newberry built an eight point lead at 59-51, but the stingy Pioneers did not go away as they went on a 15-4 run to take a 66-63 lead with 8:08 remaining.
Using a 13-6 advantage over the following four minutes, Newberry gained a 76-72 edge and to take the lead for good. The Wolves connected on eight foul shots down the stretch en route to their eleventh victory on the season.
In the first half, Newberry had a sluggish start as Tusculum jumped out to a 13-2 advantage at the 13:52 mark following a 3-point basket by Cory Fagan. The Wolves slowly closed the gap with the Pioneers at 26-20 following a jumper by Evans with 6:37 remaining in the half.
With 3:01 left, Newberry narrowed the gap to four en route to an 8-4 run to close the first half, trailing 37-35. Mitch Riggs tallied 10 points in the first half while Hamish Burns added four points and five rebounds. The Pioneers’ Javon Price and Chase Mounce combined for 23 first half points.
Riggs finished the game with 16 points including 6-of-6 from the line. Dondray Walker tallied 12 points and seven rebounds.
Javon Price tallied 26 points and Chase Mounce posted 23 points and seven rebounds for the Pioneers.
The Wolves will host the Catawba Indians on Wednesday January 7 at 7 p.m. inside Eleazer Arena. Following, Newberry hits the road for three straight road contests.
