NEWBERRY - The Newberry College men's basketball team was handed its first loss of the 2014-15 campaign on December 15 at Lincoln Memorial, 100-81. With the loss Newberry dropped out of both national polls and fell two spots to No. 5 in the D2SIDA Southeast Regional Rankings.
Coming back from the holiday break, Newberry intends to get back on the winning path as they host the 1-9 Tusculum Pioneers on Saturday afternoon insidea Eleazer Arena. The Wolves have defeated Tusculum in the previous five contests including the most recent, a 96-75 victory on February 15, 2014 inside the friendly confines.
The Wolves are led by senior Demarkus Smith with 12.1ppg while Mitch Riggs and Dondray Walker average 11.7ppg each. James Ashby has also been solid for Newberry as he leads the way in rebounding with an average of 4.2 per contest. For the Scarlet and Gray they are second in the nation in 3-point baskets made with 151 and fourth in points per game with 94.7.
Tusculum enters the contest with one win on the season, a 66-61 victory at Brevard on November 25, 2014. On the season, Chase Mounce is a big factor both in scoring as well as rebounds. He averages 16.6 points per game while snagging 8.3 rebounds. Zach Davis (10.4ppg) and Javon Price (11.3ppg) also contribute well for Tusculum offensively.
Following tomorrow's game, the Wolves host the Catawba Indians at 7 p.m. on January 7 then hit the road for three consectutive conference matchups. Saturday afternoon's game can be seen on NewberryWolves.tv and listened to by way of WKDK-AM1240.
