Wolves handle Tornados with ease in win

NEWBERRY – The Newberry Wolves men’s basketball team eased to victory on Saturday afternoon against the Brevard Tornados 101-72 inside Eleazer Arena.

Junior Mitch Riggs buried 21 points to lead the Wolves in scoring while Dondray Walker tallied 17 points and freshman James Stepp made a career-high 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting, all from distance.

Newberry and Brevard were neck and neck until the 10:35 mark in the first half when Newberry held a slim two point advantage at 25-23, for the next five minutes the Wolves went on a 17-6 run powered by three turnovers from Brevard and capped off by a Hamish Burns layup. Burns finished the game with eight points.

The Wolves used an 11-5 run to close the half with a 53-34 commanding lead. Pacing the way for the Scarlet and Gray in the half were the 18 points off of turnovers to the four by Brevard.

As the second half continued on the Wolves held their lead 72-49 before extending it to 31 by using a 14-6 run over a five minute span. The Wolves held on to their advantage and lead until the final buzzer to earn their fifth victory on the season and second straight conference win.

For the Tornados, Darius Moose led the way with 25 points and 10 rebounds while Jaylon Debardlabon also tallied 10 rebounds for Brevard.

On Newberry’s end, Demarkus Smith added 13 points and 3 rebounds and Gerald Evans contributed eight rebounds including five on the offensive end.

The Wolves next contest is on Tuesday evening as they travel to the Catawba Indians with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m.
