NEWBERRY – The 2014-15 campaign for Newberry men’s basketball gets underway on Friday afternoon in the four team Sodexo SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge as the Wolves take on the Erskine Flying Fleet.
Newberry concluded its preseason on Tuesday evening in an exhibition loss to the Charlotte 49ers, 112-86. The Wolves’ ability to force Charlotte into taking deep shots was effective but the 49ers kept making those shots en route to burying 12 of their 16 attempts from downtown.
Looking ahead to tomorrow afternoon Newberry faces an Erskine team that they haven’t seen since 2008 when they won 64-51 inside the friendly confines of Eleazer Arena.
The Wolves are led by seniors Dondray Walker and Demarkus Smith who combined for 32.7 points per game last year. Joining Walker and Smith is sophomore Xavier Holmes and Gerald Evans who combined for 18.9 points and 9.1 rebounds per game for the Scarlet and Gray.
For the Flying Fleet they are led by Roderick Perkins who averaged 24.9 points per game and 6.7 rebounds per game. The Fleet come into the matchup having averaged 70.6 points per game last year while holding opponents to only 66.5 points.
Following today’s game, Newberry will play North Greenville on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. from the DeLoach Center in Hartsville.
