ROCK HILL – The Newberry College men’s basketball team has been selected to finish second in the annual South Atlantic Conference preseason coaches' poll released today.
This is the Wolves' highest preseason ranking under head coach Dave Davis and highest ranking on record for the scarlet and gray.
“We are very excited that the progress of our program is being recognized in our league, in our region and around the country,” said Davis. “That being said preseason polls mean nothing and we will continue working for post season possibilities and rankings.”
Lincoln Memorial is projected to finish first in the conference, only 13 points above the Wolves while the Queens Royals are projected to finish third with nine points separating them from Newberry.
Senior forward Dondray Walker (Fountain Inn, S.C.) headlines the 2014-15 Men’s Preseason All-Conference first team, a spot which he held last year as well. Walker has been selected as an All-American Honorable Mention by the Sporting News and SAC Preseason Player of the Year by the DII Bulletin.
Walker is joined on the first team by senior guard Demarkus Smith (Johnston, S.C.) who finished last season with a team high of 16.4 points per game.
“Dondray and Demarkus have worked extremely hard and improved tremendously in their time at Newberry and we will need both to lead us on the journey of the 2014-15 season,” said Davis.
Newberry begins the regular season in Hartsville for the Sodexo SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge as they play Erskine at 3 p.m. on November 14 and North Greenville at 4:30 p.m. on November 15.
