ROCK HILL - Newberry College junior Dondray Walker has been named the South Atlantic Conference men's basketball player of the week as announced Monday morning.
Walker, a junior from Fountain Inn and graduate of Hillcrest HS, helped lead the Wolves to two wins last week over Catawba and Tusculum. Those wins pushed Newberry's record to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in SAC play, leaving the Wolves as the final undefeated team in the SAC and in the state of South Carolina this season.
Walker averaged 22 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, while shooting an efficient 61.9 percent from the floor and 75 percent from long range.
Walker got his week started by scoring 27 points on 9-of-14 shooting on Tuesday in a 99-86 Newberry win over Catawba, then added 17 points - including 4-of-5 from deep - on Saturday in the Wolves' 96-80 road victory against Tusculum.
Walker currently leads the SAC in three-point accuracy at 60.7 percent and is tied for ninth in scoring at 18 points per game.
The Wolves lead the conference with a 93.5 points per game average through six games and have the mid-week off for finals this week. Newberry travels to rival Anderson on Saturday for a 4 p.m tipoff.
