LUXEMBOURG - Newberry College's Aegir Steinarsson moved up to the starting point guard for Iceland's national team last week, leading his team to the bronze medal at the 15th Games of the Small States of Europe.
Iceland had a record of 2-2 in the four game competition. Steinarsson opened the tournament with 27 points in 21 minutes in a 94-53 thrashing of San Marino. He was 8-of-12 from the field and 6-of-9 on three-pointers, while converting all five of his free throw attempts.
He scored eight points in an 88-61 loss to hosts Luxembourg, then led Iceland with 17 points in a 72-67 win over Andorra that essentially clinched a medal for his team. He was 6-of-10 from the field and made 4-of-8 three-pointers, also grabbing five rebounds and dishing out three assists. He scored 11 points in the third quarter. In the tournament's final game, he was limited to five points in an 81-52 loss to Cyprus.
Cyprus won gold and Luxembourg was the silver medalist.
