NEWBERRY - Newberry College men's basketball coach Dave Davis has announced the signing of point guard Zach Jones, who played this past year at Moravian Prep in Lenoir, N.C., and led his team to the National Prep School Association (NPSA) National Championship.
The 6-foot-0 guard averaged 26.3 points per game and scored 35 points against national prep power Oak Hill Academy. Zach was the team leader for Moravian and averaged 5.7 assists and 3.6 steals as well. His high scoring game of the season was 43 points against Charis Prep.
The Charlotte, N.C., native played his freshman year of high school ball at Harding, before playing his final three seasons at Huntsville High School in Huntsville, Ala., where he averaged 12 points, five assists and five steals per game his senior year. Jones was named to both the Huntsville All-Area and All-City teams in his final season.
Moravian Prep coach Jeremy Ellis has this to say about Jones, “This year Zach was a catalyst for our team on and off the court. We believe Newberry is getting a great leader as well as a great player. "
“Zach very quickly moved to the top of our recruiting list after his visit,” said Davis. “He made an incredible impression on our players and coaches and everyone here at Newberry College knew immediately that he would be a great fit. Zach is another guy that earned a great deal of Division I interest and credit our assistant coaching staff led by Rob Perron and our team for doing an excellent job recruiting him.
"He is a scoring point guard, with many leadership qualities, that can play at full speed, has terrific instincts and can distribute the basketball to our many scorers. He will make an immediate impact in an area that we were not very productive this year.”
Jones joins Kaheem Praylow of Newberry, Vincent Hicklin from Lower Richland and Cole Birchfield from Dade County, Ga., in the 2013 recruiting class.
