NEWBERRY - Newberry head basketball coach Dave Davis has announced the signing of Cole Birchfield, an all-state honoree from Dade County High School in Georgia.
The 6-foo-t0 shooting guard averaged 29.9 points per game and scored 59 points including 13 three-pointers in a game vs. Chattanooga-Howard, tying a state record for made three-pointers in one game. Birchfield led his team to a career 91-25 record and was named second team all-state as a senior, he was named all-region as both a junior and senior and was the 2013 region Player of the Year.
Cole scored 1,742 career points including 325 three-pointers. Along with his 59-point outburst, he scored 40 or more three times this past season. He was also named to the prestigious Super Ten Team composed of players from the Chattanooga area including northwest Georgia, southeast Tennessee and northeast Alabama.
Birchfield is a true student-athlete carrying a 3.7 grade point average and is ranked 13th in his class.
“Newberry College got a steal and a lot of people missed in recruiting on this young man,” said legendary Dade County High and 37-year coaching veteran Glen Hicks.
