ROCK HILL - Newberry College's Dondray Walker has been named to the all-South Atlantic Conference second team, while teammate Mitch Riggs on the SAC All-Freshman team. The postseason conference honors were announced by the league office Wednesday morning.
Walker, a sophomore from Fountain Inn, earns all-conference honors for the second straight year after being named to the 2012 second team. Walker is the Wolves' leading scorer on the season, averaging 14.0 points per game, with the scarlet and gray on pace to break the conference record for scoring average. He ranks ninth in the conference in scoring and has made and even mix of 60 two-pointers and 59 three-pointers this year. Walker scored in double digits in 21 games, with a season high of 28 at Anderson. He also recorded a double-double in that game with 10 rebounds. He has a shooting percentage of 40.6% from the field, 36.6% from three-point land amd 78.8% at the free throw line. He also averages 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.4 steals per game.
Riggs, a freshman from Langwarrin, Victoria, Australia, ranks third in the conference with 75 made three-pointers on the season and has consistently ranked in the top 20 in three-pointer percentage. He currently averages 11.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. He has scored in double digits in 13 games, with a streak of five double figure games. He set a career high with 21 points in the season finale against Lenoir-Rhyne. He shoots 43.7% from the field, 43.4% from three-point range and 86.2% from the charity stripe.
The Wolves tied a program record for SAC wins this year with a 10-8 league record, finishing in sixth place in the conference. Newberry plays at third-seed Wingate in the quarterfinals of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament at 7 p.m. today. The Wolves' 14-12 regular season record also locks up their second consecutive winning season. Newberry has not had consecutive winning seasons since having 11 straight winning seasons from 1971-72 to 1981-82 under head coaches Nield Gordon and Larry DiBiase. It is only Newberry's fifth winning season since joining NCAA Division II 21 years ago.
Newberry is also the conference's regular season statistical champion in scoring offense (88.5 points per game) and steals per game (10.5 steals per game).
