NEWBERRY - Newberry head men's basketball coach Dave Davis announces the enrollmen of 6-foot-5, 200 lbs/ Gilbert McGregor from New Orleans, La., for the upcoming 2012-13 season.

McGregor played this past season at the nationally renowned Brewster Academy in ironically Wolfboro, N.H., where his team won the national prep school championship and had six players sign with NCAA Division I schools-NC State, St. Johns, Michigan, Florida State and two players signed with Xavier. Brewster also won the national championship in 2010, has averaged 29 wins per season and had 35 alumni on Division I rosters in 2010.

McGregor was an all-state, all-metro and district MVP while playing for Lusher Charter School in New Orleans in 2011, while averaging 21 points and 11 rebounds per game and leading his team to the district championship. He was on both the Louisiana state All-Star Team and made the New Orleans city All-Star team.

A true student athlete, McGregor was named to the Academic All-State team and was a member of the National Honor Society while carrying a 3.82 GPA. He will be a communications major and chose Newberry College over some of the most prestigious academic institutions in the country.

"We are extremely excited and lucky to be adding Gilbert to our team and our school, especially at this late stage," said Davis. "He is a first class young man who comes from a terrific family. Gilbert has his priorities in order and is a focused, hard working young man who really wants to get better. He played against the best of the best this past season at Brewster and was an outstanding high school player in New Orleans when he was just 16 years old. He just turned 18 years of age, so my guess is he will continue to grow and his best basketball is ahead of him."

Gilbert's father, Gil, played at Wake Forest, in the NBA and overseas and is now the voice of the NBA's New Orleans Hornets and begins his 21st year with the team as he was originally in Charlotte with the Hornets before the franchise moved. He is also an analyst for ACC college games and is actively involved in the New Orleans community.

McGregor joins an outstanding group in Davis' second recruiting class which includes South Carolina Player of the Year, Xavier Holmes from Great Falls, Ohio all-stater Brandon Taylor and sharp shooter Mitch Riggs from Australia.
