NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College head men's basketball coach Dave Davis has announced the addition of Xavier Holmes of Great Falls High School to the Wolves' roster for the 2012-13 season.
The 6-foot-4 Holmes comes from the program of Newberry College Athletic Hall of Famer John Smith, who is all-time winningest coach in South Carolina high school basketball history with 893 wins. The Red Devils went 103-7 in Holmes' four seasons on the team, reaching the Class A state championship game in all four seasons and winning the title in 2011 and 2012.
Holmes made a name for himself as an internet sensation with massive back-to-back dunks in Great Falls' Class A championship win over Johnsonville in 2012. [YouTube video]
Holmes was named the 2011-12 Class A Player of the Year by the High School Sports Report and was named all-state as a junior and senior by the South Carolina Basketball Coaches' Association and the HSSR. He was a two-time Region 3-A Player of the Year and was named the Area Player of the Year by The Herald (Rock Hill) in 2012.
In his senior season, Holmes averaged 20.5 points, 11.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 4.0 blocks per game after averaging 17.1 point, 9.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 2.6 blocks as a junior.
“Xavier Holmes is clearly one of the best high school players in the state of South Carolina,” said Davis. “He is a winner, is ideally made for our style of play and played for an outstanding coach in John Smith. Xavier can play almost any position and will make an immediate impact on our program. We are very lucky to have him sign with us as he is clearly a Division I talent and continues a line of South Carolina young men who are joining us as we continue to build the Newberry basketball program.
"Playing primarily as an inside player at Great Falls, I was surprised and I think most college coaches missed on how versatile Xavier is. He can run, rebound, score, block shots and is an incredible athlete who can really pass the basketball. He will be blessed at Newberry with a lot of guys who can score around him. We have added another very talented basketball player who works extremely hard and is unselfish.”
Holmes is the third signee for 2012-13, joining Mitch Riggs of Australia and Brandon Taylor of Coshocton, Ohio.
