MARS HILL, N.C. - The Newberry College Wolves shot the lights out at Stanford Arena on the way to a 122-102 victory over the Mars Hill Lions on Wednesday night. Savad Garner (Fountain Inn, S.C.) and Quayshun Hawkins (Columbia, S.C.) led the way with 32 points apiece in the win.
Newberry (7-3, 2-1 South Atlantic Conference) had a spectacular shooting game, connecting on 58.1% (43-of-74) of its field goals, 50% (15-of-30) of its three-pointers and 70% (21-of-30) at the charity stripe.
Garner had a fantastic night in the low post, scoring on 14-of-16 shots for 32 points as well as eight rebounds, while Hawkins was stellar from the outside. The true freshman connected on 8-of-12 three-point attempts and made all eight of his free throws. He also had six rebounds and six assists.
The Wolves started off on fire, shooting 68.4% (26-of-38) in the first half, including 11-of-17 (64.7%) from beyond the arc on the way to a 68-45 halftime lead.
Senior Chris Reynolds (Augusta, Ga.) did not attempt a field goal in the first half, but went 6-of-11 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the free throw line on the way to 17 points to go with seven rebounds. Also in double digits was Matt Dixon (Elizabeth City, N.C.) with 10 points.
For Mars Hill, two players cracked the 30 point barrier. The SAC' s leading scorer - Sammy Emile - had a game-high 33 points as well as nine rebounds, while Terrell Harris scored 32 points.
Newberry had assists on 29 of the 43 made baskets, with Aegir Steinarsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) led the way with seven assists. Four players had at least four assists for the Wolves.
The Wolves return to action with a tough test on Saturday night in the Cumblernad Gap, paying a visit to No. 3 Lincoln Memorial. The Railsplitters are 13-0 and 3-0 in SAC play.
