ROCK HILL, S.C. - Newberry College redshirt freshman forward Savad Garner has been named the South Atlantic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week. the league office announced today.
Garner, a 6-foot-2 forward from Fountain Inn, S.C., and Hillcrest HS, led the Wolves to a 3-0 week and earned MVP honors in the Newberry Classic. Garner averaged 19.0 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, while playing only 21.3 minutes per contest. He shot a stellar 77.4% from the floor.
In Tuesday's 85-83 win over North Georgia, he was 9-of-13 (.692) from the floor with 21 points and 4 rebounds. In Saturday's 103-65 win over Barber-Scotia, he connected on 7-of-8 shots (.875), with a team high 19 points. In Sunday's 101-75 win over Washington Adventist, he made 8-of-10 (.800) shots and once again tied for the team lead with 17 points.
For the season, Garner has been the Wolves' high point man in four of five games, leads the team with an 18.0 scoring average and averages 5.0 rebounds per game. He is shooting 75.5 percent from the field for the year. He has helped the Wolves to average 92.2 points per game and outscore their opponents by 14.4 points per game.
Garner and the 4-1 Wolves have a rematch with Washington Adventist on Thanksgiving weekend, playing on the Shock's home floor - "The Pitt" - in Takoma Park, Md., at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Newberry beat WAU 98-78 in the D.C. area last year, and was the only squad to defeat Washington Adventist in "The Pitt" last season.
