NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College head men's basketball coach Dave Davis announces the signing of Tomas Heidar Tomasson, the leading scorer on the Under-18 Iceland National Team at the European Championships last year. Tomasson was also named the MVP at the Scandinavian Championship.
The 6-foot-4 guard is an excellent shooter and has made as many as seven three-pointers in a game and once went 10-of-11 from the field and scored 28 points. He was a member of the Under 16 and Under 18 National Teams which competed in both the Scandinavian and European Championships and is one of the top three players on the Under 20 National Team which will compete this July in Bosnia. He was named All-Icelandic League Newcomer of the Year in 2010 while averaging 15.8 points per game.
“Tomas is a lefty, a great shooter who has improved and made himself an excellent driver as well," Davis said. "He will be very good in our up-tempo system which opens up the floor where his skills will be quite valuable. He has played against outstanding competition and does not come in as your normal freshman. His experience will give him a leg up on many college freshmen.”
Iceland National Team coach Ben Gudmundsson says, “Tomas is a combo guard who is athletic but also very skilled. He is a great shooter but also goes strong to the basket.”
Tomasson is the fourth signee for Davis in the 2011-12 recruiting class joining three South Carolina natives, Quayshun Hawkins from Dreher HS, Owen Jacobs from Fox Creek HS and EJ Mills from Clinton Junior College who played his high school ball at Dutch Fork. These four will join three redshirts and eight returners on the 2011-12 Newberry squad.
