ROCK HILL, S.C. - Newberry College sophomore guard Shamel Akins (Charlotte, N.C.) has been named the South Atlantic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending November 21, 2010, the league office announced today.
Akins, a 5-foot-7 point guard, averaged 21.5 points and 2.0 rebounds per game at the Claude Saunders/Wendy's Johnson C. Smith Tipoff Classic as the Wolves went 1-1 with a comeback win over St. Paul's and a loss to Johnson C. Smith.
In his Newberry debut on Saturday, Akins led the Wolves to an 84-76 win over St. Paul's with 26 points and 3 rebounds, shooting 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the floor and 60 percent (3-of-5) on three-point attempts. Newberry trailed by as many as 15 points in the game, but Akins scored 19 points in the second half to help earn the win.
In Sunday's 103-83 loss to Johnson C. Smith, Akins once again played well, shooting 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from the floor for 17 points. 16 of Akins' points came in the second half, a period in which Newberry outscored JCSU by 12 points and forced 21 turnovers.
For the week, Akins averaged 21.5 points per game with a 52 percent (13-of-25) shooting percentage, including 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) from behind the arc. He did this in 17.5 minutes per game, with the majority of his scoring coming in big second halves for the Wolves.
The Wolves return to action tomorrow night at Voorhees College in Denmark, S.C. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
