Newberry men drop 55-53 decision to Carson-Newman
Monday, February 1, 2010 | by Huffor leads all scorers with 16 points off the bench

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's basketball team came out on the losing end of a low-scoring battle on Monday evening, dropping a 55-53 decision to the Carson-Newman College Eagles.

Newberry (7-13, 2-7 SAC) was paced by 16 points off of the bench from Danny Huffor (Marco Island, Fla.) and 11 points from Ray Robinson (Jacksonville, Fla.). Stephane Bakinde (Yaounde, Cameroon) blocked six shots in the game to set a career high.

Carson-Newman (9-10, 4-5 SAC) completed the season sweep with 14 points and nine rebounds from Darron Maxtion (Huntsville, Ala.) and 14 points from Jordan Dixon (Clinton, Tenn.). Cameron Sharp (Knoxville, Tenn.) netted 11 points to round out double digit scorers.

Both teams struggled to score in the early stages of the game, as Newberry made just one of its first 13 shots and Carson-Newman made only one of its first six shots and turned the ball over 10 times in the first 10 minutes of the game. When the media timeout came at the 9:59 mark, Newberry held a 7-6 lead. The offenses began to put a few points on the board after that as the halftime score was 24-all after a three-pointer from Huffor tied the game for the fifth time.

Newberry shot the ball twice as many times as Carson-Newman in the opening 20 minutes, but connected on just 9-of-30 (30.0%) shots from the floor, including 4-of-17 (23.5%) from three-point land. Carson-Newman was 7-of-15 (46.7%) from the floor in the first half, but turned the ball over 15 times.

Bakinde made a jumper on the opening possession of the second half, but Carson-Newman responded with a three-pointer to take a lead it would not rescind for the next 14 minutes. The Eagles earned foul calls and made the most of their free throw opportunities to get out to an 8-point lead with 8:43 to play, when a Sharp layup made it a 46-38 game. However, Robinson went on a personal 6-0 run to bring the deficit back down to two points.

The Eagles regained momentum on a Sharp three-pointer, but Huffor answered immediately and a Bakinde layup tied the game at 49-all with 5:19 to play. A Robinson put back bucket gave Newberry its first lead since the early stages of the second half, but that lead was short lived as Newberry failed to make another field goal attempt for the remainder of the game. The scarlet and gray scored only two points in the final four minutes and the calls did not go their way, sending NC to its second straight home defeat by less than three points.

Despite a poor shooting night that saw Newberry make only 20-of-56 (35.7%) of its shots, the game was decided at the free throw line. Carson-Newman was 19-of-28 on its free throw attempts, while Newberry connected on 8-of-10.

The scarlet and gray have now lost four conference games at home, with three of those losses coming by margins of two points or less.

Newberry will look to get back on the winning track this Wednesday at Mars Hill. Tipoff in Stanford Arena is set for 8 p.m.
