NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College athletic director Brad Edwards announced today the hiring of Jimmy Link as the school's head men's and women's cross country coach. Link will also serve as an assistant men's basketball coach under Steve DeMeo.

Link, a 2003 graduate of Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla., looks forward to taking on the dual responsibilities of coaching both cross country and basketball.

"I'm very excited for this opportunity and I'm glad I'm joining the Newberry College family," Link said. "I look forward to leading the cross country program to new heights and assisting in the building of our men's basketball program.

"My main interest is developing the student-athletes that I coach. I enjoy encouraging my athletes to reach their potential and instilling confidence in their abilities. I'm ready to get to work and help the athletes excel," Link added.

"Jimmy Link brings to Newberry a good mix of personal experience both as a student-athlete and a college coach," Edwards said. "His energy and enthusiasm will be great assets to our cross country and men's basketball programs."

Link was a four-year letterman in men's basketball at Flagler, where he led the team to its first NAIA National Tournament bid as a point guard in 2002-03. The Saints were ranked in the NAIA Top 25 nationally in each of Link's four seasons as a player and he helped lead the team to a FSC Tournament Championship as a senior. Flagler won 20 or more games in three of the four years that Link played.

After completing his studies at Flagler in December 2003, Link joined the Saints' coaching staff for the 2004-05 season. That team finished the season ranked No. 8 nationally in NAIA Division II.

In 2005-06, Link was an assistant coach at Washington College, an NCAA Division III institution in Chestertown, Md., where he helped lead the Shoremen to the Centennial Conference tournament semifinals.

Link rejoined the Flagler staff for the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons as the Saints made the transition from the NAIA ranks to NCAA Division II. Flagler went 34-20 in those two seasons, with a 20-7 record in the 2007-08 campaign. In 2008-09, Link was an assistant coach at the University of North Florida, an NCAA Division I institution in Jacksonville, Fla.

"Jimmy Link comes to Newberry with a wide variety of experiences at every level from Division I to the NAIA," said head men's basketball coach Steve DeMeo. "He has a reputation for developing players and recruiting talent and he is very well respected within the coaching community."

Link is engaged to his fiancé, Jennifer Wages, and the couple will reside in Newberry.
