INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Newberry College men's basketball team is ranked seventh in this week's NCAA Division II Southeast Regional rankings, which were released today. The top 10 teams in each region are listed each week, with eight teams from each region making the NCAA Tournament next week. This is the final regional ranking released before the NCAA Tournament.
Newberry (20-7) jumped two spots from last week's rankings after defeating Brevard at home and defeating Lincoln Memorial on the road in the regular season finale. The scarlet and gray are one of four South Atlantic Conference teams in the region's top 10.
Lenoir-Rhyne was the stayed steady this week's rankings at sixth place. Catawba is in eighth and Tusculum is in ninth entering the Food Lion SAC Tournament Quarterfinals, which begin tonight.
The Peach Belt Conference holds the top four spots in this week's rankings. Augusta State remains in first place, followed by USC Aiken in second. Armstrong Atlantic State is third and Georgia College and State is fourth, with all four squads staying in the same spot as last week.
Conference Carolinas is represented by Barton College in fifth and Mount Olive College in 10th. Mount Olive was eliminated from the Conference Carolinas Tournament by Erskine College earlier this week. The Southeast Region is comprised of Conference Carolinas, the Peach Belt Conference and the South Atlantic Conference.
Newberry, which is the second seed in the 2009 Food Lion SAC Tournament, hosts seventh-seeded Mars Hill College in Eleazer Arena at 8 p.m. today. Newberry is hosting men's postseason play in Eleazer Arena for the first time.
