NDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Newberry College men's basketball team is ranked ninth in this week's NCAA Division II Southeast Regional rankings, which were released today. The top 10 teams in each region are listed each week, with eight teams from each region making the NCAA Tournament in March. The regional rankings will be released weekly on Wednesdays through March 4, 2009.
Newberry (18-7 overall, 8-6 South Atlantic Conference) dropped two spots from last week's rankings after defeating Tusculum at home and falling to Wingate on the road. The scarlet and gray are one of four SAC teams in the region's top 10.
Lenoir-Rhyne was the big mover in this week's rankings, jumping from 10th to sixth. Tusculum is seventh and Catawba drops to 10th.
The Peach Belt Conference holds the top four spots in this week's rankings. Augusta State is now in first place, followed by USC Aiken. Armstrong Atlantic State is third and Georgia College and State is fourth, with all four squads staying in the same spot as last week.
Conference Carolinas is represented by Barton College in fifth and Mount Olive College in eighth. The Southeast Region is comprised of Conference Carolinas, the Peach Belt Conference and the South Atlantic Conference.
Newberry will start its final push for a top four finish in the SAC and a regional berth with an 8 p.m. tipoff against Brevard College tonight in Eleazer Arena.
