ROCK HILL, S.C. - Newberry College's Brett Goodwell has been named South Atlantic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, league officials announced today.
Goodwell, a junior forward from Inglewood, Calif., led all scorers with 23 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists in leading Newberry to a 79-73 victory on the road at Catawba last Wednesday in Salisbury, N.C. Goodwell also hit nine-of-16 field goal attempts (56 percent), had two steals and blocked a shot in the victory as Newberry completed the regular season sweep of Catawba for the first time since 2003-04.
Goodwell is currently second on the team in scoring (12.7 ppg) and first on the squad in rebounding (7.3 rpg) for Newberry (17-6, 7-5 SAC). Newberry is ranked eighth in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region. The scarlet and gray host Tusculum on Wednesday and visit Wingate on Saturday in a pair of game that are crucial to a potential NCAA Tournament berth.
The SAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week is voted on by the league's nine sports information directors.
