INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Newberry College men's basketball team is ranked eighth in this week's NCAA Division II Southeast Regional rankings, which were released today. The top 10 teams in each region are listed each week, with eight teams from each region making the NCAA Tournament in March. The regional rankings will be released weekly on Wednesdays through March 4, 2009.
Newberry (16-6 overall, 6-5 South Atlantic Conference) fell one spot from last week's rankings after dropping contests to Mars Hill and Lenoir-Rhyne at home. The scarlet and gray are one of four SAC teams in the region's top 10.
League leaders Tusculum are ranked fifth, Catawba is ranked sixth and Mars Hill enters the rankings for the first time this season in the tenth spot.
The Peach Belt Conference also holds four spots in this week's rankings. Georgia College and State is once again in the top spot, followed by Augusta State in second and USC Aiken in third. Armstrong Atlantic State sits in the fifth position.
Conference Carolinas is represented by Barton College in seventh and Mount Olive College in ninth. The Southeast Region is comprised of Conference Carolinas, the Peach Belt Conference and the South Atlantic Conference.
Newberry will attempt to climb the SAC standings and regional rankings with an 8 p.m. tipoff against Catawba College tonight.
