INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Newberry College men's basketball team in ranked seventh in this week's Division II Southeast Region poll, which was released today. The top 10 teams in each region are listed each week, with eight teams from each region making the NCAA Tournament in March. The regional rankings will be released weekly on Wednesdays through March 4, 2009.
Newberry, which carries a 16-4 overall record into tonight's contest with Mars Hill, jumps two spots from last week's ranking of ninth in the region. The scarlet and gray are one of three South Atlantic Conference teams in this week's top 10, with Catawba College at fifth and Tusculum College at eighth.
The Peach Belt Conference holds the majority of the positions in this week's rankings, led by Georgia College and State University at the top, followed by Augusta State University in second. The University of South Carolina-Aiken is third, Armstrong Atlantic State University is fourth, North Georgia College and State University is ninth and Clayton State University is in tenth.
Conference Carolinas is represented by Barton College in sixth. The Southeast Region is comprised of Conference Carolinas, the Peach Belt Conference and the South Atlantic Conference.
Newberry will continue its record-breaking season and attempt to climb the SAC standings and regional rankings with an 8 p.m. tipoff against Mars Hill College tonight.
