INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Newberry College men's basketball team in ranked ninth in this week's Division II Southeast Region poll, which was released Wednesday. The top 10 teams in each region are listed each week, with eight teams from each region making the NCAA Tournament in March. The regional rankings will be released weekly on Wednesdays through March 4, 2009.
Newberry (15-4, 5-3 South Atlantic Conference) adds the program's first ever Division II regional ranking to the achievements of an already remarkable season. The 2008-09 squad's 15 regular season wins thus far is the most since Newberry joined Division II in the early 1990s, as well as the most since Newberry went 21-10 in 1981-82, the first year the school played in Eleazer Arena.
The scarlet and gray will have an opportunity to move up the polls in their second trip through the South Atlantic Conference loop, as they are the second-highest ranked SAC team behind Catawba in the fifth spot. Tusculum College is behind Newberry in 10th.
The Peach Belt Conference holds six of the top eight spots, led by Augusta State in first place. The PBC teams will face continued competition from each other, hopefully opening more spots for Newberry to move to. Barton College is ranked sixth, and is the only Conference Carolinas team in the top 10. The Southeast region is comprised of the Conference Carolinas, Peach Belt Conference and South Atlantic Conference.
Newberry will continue its record-breaking season and attempt to climb the SAC standings and regional rankings on Saturday at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn. Tipoff in Holt Fieldhouse is set for 8 p.m.
