Wheeler double-double not enough, as Newberry drops 76-63 decision to L-R
Saturday, January 10, 2009 | by Sophomore gets first career double-double with 24 points and 10 boards

HICKORY, N.C - The Newberry College men's basketball team dropped a 76-63 decision to Lenoir-Rhyne University in South Atlantic Conference action at Shuford Memorial Gym on Saturday night.

Newberry (11-3, 2-2 SAC) was led by Jesse Wheeler (Suwanee, Ga.), who recorded his first career double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds, both of which are career highs. Clemente Martin (Freeport, Bahamas) scored 14 for the scarlet and gray.

Lenoir-Rhyne (8-6, 3-1 SAC) followed senior guard Josh Rudder (Graham, N.C.), who scored 19 points, while Elliott McDowell (Canton, N.C.) scored 18 for the Bears. D.J. Blackmon (Albemarle, N.C.) scored 11 for the hosts.

It was a back-and-forth affair in the early stages of the first half, as neither team could pull away to a significant lead. A Hodges three-pointer tied the game up at 19-all with 10 minutes until the break kickstarted an 11-0 Bears run that put L-R up 27-19 with 7:18 left on a pair of Rudder free throws.

Newberry answered back in the latter stages of the period, cutting the lead down to two points at 32-30 with two minutes left on a Wheeler bucket. However, the Bears scored the final five points of the half to take a 37-30 lead into the locker room.

The scarlet and gray cut the lead to five in the first three minutes of the second half, but Lenoir-Rhyne used another 6-0 run to pull away. Newberry cut the deficit to nine at the 13:40 mark, but the Bears responded with a 7-0 surge that effectively put the game away with 10 minutes to play. L-R pushed the lead to as many as 19 with two minutes to play, but Newberry scored the final six points of the game to get to the 76-63 final.

Newberry struggled from the field, shooting 18-of-47 (38.3%) from the floor, while the Bears were a blistering 28-of-50 (56.0%). The teams tied in the rebounding category, each grabbing 30 boards.

Newberry will look to get back above .500 in the SAC next week, as the scarlet and gray return to Eleazer Arena on Wednesday to take on the Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial University (7-6, 3-1 SAC) in a SAC contest. L-R heads to the mountains to take on Mars Hill on Wednesday night.
