NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's basketball team has begun multiple programs of community service with Gallman Elementary School and Newberry Elementary School.

Six players went to Gallman Elementary on Friday morning and spoke to third grade classes on the importance of athletics and education. The classes had just finished reading a book about school and basketball.

Starting on October 1 through the rest of the fall semester, the team is partnering with Newberry Elementary in their lunch buddy program. Twice a month for the rest of the semester, team members will go to the school in pairs to eat lunch with a buddy that the school assigns them. The program is designed to help the young students realize the importance of education and give them a male role model to look up to.

"It's been great to see our kids interact with the younger kids already," head coach Jeremy Luther said. "Our kids need to make sure they give back to the community as they have been given so much."
