NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's basketball team picked up its first victory of the season with a 93-59 victory over the visiting Allen University Yellowjackets Tuesday night.
Newberry (1-2) had three players score in double figures, led by 25 points from Clemente Martin (Freeport, Bahamas) and 21 points from Zach Chandler (Greenville, S.C.). Martin was 10-of-13 from the field, while Chandler was 8-of-12, including 5-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc.
Terrance Spillers (Charleston, S.C.) scored 10 points to reach double digits for the first time at Newberry, while freshman Danny Friend (Atlanta, Ga.) was Newberry's leading rebounder with seven.
Allen (1-6) was led by a double-double from John Doctor, who scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
The lopsided score wasn't a sure thing early, as the Yellowjackets fought back from an early 10-3 deficit to take an 18-16 lead with 11:31 left in the first half on a three-pointer from Doctor.
But Newberry regained the lead on a Chandler triple with ten minutes left until halftime, and never looked back, extending its lead to 13 by the half.
The Indians extended their lead bit by bit until exploding for a 20-2 run in the middle of the half, capped off by a thunderous alley-oop dunk from Chandler to Martin with 7:55 to play, giving Newberry a 35-point lead.
Newberry's biggest lead of the game came when Tommy Burke (Newberry, S.C.) hit a triple with 5:36 remaining to put Newberry up 86-50.
The Indians travel to Greenwood for their next game, taking on Lander University with a 6 p.m. tip at Horne Arena.
