Newberry Men's Basketball Picked Fifth in Preseason Coaches Poll

HICKORY, N.C. - The Newberry College menís basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the 2006-07 season by the leagueís nine head coaches, the league announced on Wednesday morning at the South Atlantic Conference Menís and Womenís Basketball Media Day.

The Indians, who finished last season in fifth place, earned 47 total points.  Wingate was picked as the league favorite followed by Lenoir-Rhyne, Presbyterian, and Catawba.  Tusculum checks in at sixth while Carson Newman holds down the seventh spot.  Mars Hill and new SAC member Lincoln Memorial are both tied for eighth place.

Senior Zach Chandler was named to the preseason all-conference first team.  Chandler was the Indiansí top scorer during the 2005-06 campaign.  Senior Sammie Monroe was named to the second team all-conference.  Monroe was the teamís second leading scorer and top rebounder last season.

The Indians will start the season on the road, competing in the Anderson Hardwood Floors Classic at USC Upstate against Limestone on Friday, November 17, at 6:00 pm.
