INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The marksmanship of Newberry free throw shooters has earned the team as well as an individual player spots in the national statistics rankings, released by the NCAA yesterday.
Alonzo Hinds (Freeport, Bahamas) is Division II's 17th-best free throw shooter, making 70 of 80 from the line, good for 87.5%. He is the best from the charity stripe in the South Atlantic Conference.
As a team, Newberry is number 32 in Division II in free throw percentage. The team has made 368 of 501 free throw attempts, a 73.5% success rate. These rankings did not include Monday night's game (as reports were generated Monday evening) where the Indians went nine-for-ten from the line.
Good free throw shooting has played a part in Newberry's two-game winning streak. The Indians' nine-for-ten performance in a six-point win over North Greenville and a 19-for-24 performance in a one-point win over Wingate were crucial to victory.
