Men's basketball wins at North Greenville, 74-68
Monday, February 13, 2006 | by Indians secure first road win of season

TIGERVILLE, S.C. - Senior Michael Dease (Bennettsville, S.C.) canned five three-pointers and Newberry won its first road game of the year, defeating North Greenville College 74-68 tonight in Division II men's basketball action.

Amonzo Gantt (Royston, Ga.) led all scorers with 20 points for the Crusaders, and also pulled in 14 rebounds to give him his 11th double-double game this season. Michael Dease (Bennettsville, S.C.) led Newberry with 17 points on 5-13 shooting.

North Greenville took an early lead and kept it for the first 15 minutes of the game, but the Indians took a 24-22 lead on a Tommy Burke (Newberry, S.C.) three-pointer with just over five minutes remaining in the half. Newberry closed the first half on a 12-3 run, and held a 36-27 advantage at the break.

Newberry would get up by as many as 17 points in the second half before PJ Schumacher (Waynesburg, Pa.) drained back-to-back three-pointers to begin a Crusader rally. The Crusaders outscored Newberry 24-7 over the next eight minutes, and tied the ballgame at 61-61 on a Schumacher three-pointer with just less than four minutes to play.

Zach Chandler (Greenville, S.C.) answered with a three-pointer of his own for the Indians. Gantt then joined the sharpshooting contest and drained a trifecta to once again even the score. Then, Alonzo Hinds (Freeport, Bahamas) gave Newberry the lead for good on a three-point basket with 2:38 remaining in the game. Newberry closed out the game with four made free throws by Chandler.

Chandler, whose older brother Cam is a former North Greenville player, scored all of his 14 points in the second half. Cory Etheridge (Columbia, S.C.) and Hinds scored 11 and 10 points respectively.

Schumacher ended up with 19 points and five rebounds. He hit five three-point baskets to give him 84 this year, pulling him within one of tying the school record for three-pointers in a season.

Newberry returns to conference action Wednesday night as it hosts Presbyterian College in the second game of a doubleheader.  Women's action begins at 6 p.m., and the men play 25 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game (approximately 8 p.m.).
