Newberry wins nailbiter, 74-73, against Wingate
Saturday, February 11, 2006 | by Monroe ties a career high in points

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry’s Sammy Monroe (Mt. Olive, N.C.) tied a career-high 24 points, but it was Alonzo Hinds’ two free throws with nine seconds left that gave the Indians a 74-73 win over Wingate University in men’s South Atlantic Conference basketball action Saturday afternoon in Eleazer Arena.

Wingate’s Bill Smith (Manasquan, N.J.) stripped Newberry guard Zach Chandler (Greenville, S.C.) in the backcourt, and Sean Barnette (Rock Hill, S.C.) gave the Bulldogs their first lead in seven minutes with 31 seconds remaining in the game.  Hinds (Freeport, Bahamas) was fouled on the following possession, and the Indians’ most accurate free throw shooter toed the line and made both.  Barnette’s mid-range jumper with two seconds left rimmed out, and Newberry secured the rebound and the win.

Newberry (8-13, 3-7 SAC) led by seven with four minutes left, but five straight points from Justin Baker (Lumberton, N.C.) and a Wingate free throw brought the lead down to 70-69.  Monroe made a jumper, and Brian Grier (Charlotte, N.C.) and Barnette each made a free throw to keep the margin at one.

Newberry controlled the game for the first 15 minutes, but Wingate (11-11, 4-6 SAC) broke a 24-all tie on Baker’s jumpshot and held the lead for the next seven minutes, including a 38-35 halftime edge.  The Indians went on top with a Chandler free throw three minutes into the second period and extended the lead to 11, the largest of the game by either team, at 55-44 midway through the period.  A 13-2 Bulldog run tied the game at 57, setting the stage for the final seven minutes.

Wingate’s 52% shooting was far superior to Newberry’s 37%, but the game was lost on free throws.  The Bulldogs squandered their attempts at the line, making only nine of 22 shots (41%).  Newberry, the best free throw-shooting team in the SAC, converted 79% of its attempts.

Another factor in the Newberry win was turnovers, the Indians forcing 25 but surrendering only 17.  Turnovers resulted in 24 Newberry points, 12 more than Wingate had.

Wingate’s Baker was tops in points, scoring 28 before fouling out with 1˝ minutes left.  Barnette contributed 24 and Grier 12 in the losing effort.  Monroe led all Indians with 24, followed by Chandler and Michael Dease (Bennettsville, S.C.) with 12 and 11, respectively.  Monroe’s 12 boards made his third double-double on the season.  Grier recorded a double-double, adding 10 rebounds to his 12 markers.

Newberry goes out of conference Monday night, traveling to North Greenville for a 7 o’clock tip.  Wingate plays at St. Andrews Presbyterian, starting 30 minutes later.
