Indians record first conference win as Newberry tops Tusculum, 82-63
Saturday, January 21, 2006 | by Newberry halts seven-game losing streak

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Zach Chandler was one of four Indians to post double-digits in the points category as Newberry (6-10, 1-4 South Atlantic) halted a seven-game losing streak and posted their first conference win of the season as Newberry took down Tusculum 82-63 in SAC action Saturday afternoon. Douglas Tshomba led the Pioneers (11-7, 2-3 SAC) with 26 points.

Newberry shot 50% from the floor for the first time since Dec. 2 as Sammy Monroe shot 6-for-8 from the field and had four of Newberry’s six blocks in the game. Clemente Martin posted 14 points for the Indians while Michael Dease added 11. Martin was one rebound shy of a double-double, grabbing nine balls off the boards.

“It’s all about starting and finishing [strong],” said Newberry head coach Shaun Golden. “That’s what we’ve been working on and that’s what we did tonight. Our guys have worked hard in practice and I haven’t let up on them. I applaud the young men for staying focused today.”

Tshomba led all scorers in points and was potent from downtown, shooting 6-for-12 from three-point land for 18 of his 26 points. Jordan Lear added 10 points for the Pioneers. Newberry’s Tommy Burke, who was inducted into the Mid-Carolina High School Hall of Fame Friday night, drained his only shot of the game from beyond the arc and nabbed two rebounds.

Newberry held a one point halftime advantage at 36-35 as Burke drained his three from the left wing with less than a minute on the clock. Chandler posted 11 points in the first half and was hot from the field going 3-for-4 (2-for-3 from downtown) in the first period.

The Indians went into a lull early in the second half as Tusculum raced to a nine-point lead after the break, leading 49-40 with 14:30 remaining. Newberry awoke and fought back, going on a 23-6 run over the next eight and a half minutes to take a 64-55 lead before missed shots and flagrant and bench fouls doomed the Pioneers.

Shaun Golden records his first win over Tusculum in his tenure at Newberry with Saturday’s victory.

Newberry looks to win consecutive games for the first time since November as they host conference rival Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. in the raucous Eleazer Arena. That game will be televised by Time Warner Cable. Tusculum returns home to host Presbyterian at 8 p.m. on Jan.25.
