Indians fall short at Wingate, 100-93

WINGATE, N.C. – Alonzo Hinds led all scorers with 27 points while Sammy Monroe added 24, 16 of which came in the first half, but Newberry was edged out by Wingate, 100-93 Saturday night. Wingate was led by Justin Baker with 22 points while Bryan Grier added 17 points and seven blocks.

Newberry (5-9, 0-3 South Atlantic) is still searching for their first conference win of the season while Wingate (8-6, 2-1 SAC) goes over .500 in the conference for the first time in 2006. Newberry had five players put up double digit points while Wingate had six. The Bulldogs become the first team to post 100 or more points on Newberry this season.

The Indians were only able to poke away four steals in the second half after grabbing 13 in the first half. Newberry shot 42% from the field compared to Wingate’s 59%. The Bulldogs put down nine shots from downtown in the game to Newberry’s five. Wingate shot 60% from downtown while Newberry only shot 31%.

Newberry held a slight advantage in rebounds, 36-35, and dominated the offensive boards, 19-8.

Wingate held a 48-43 halftime lead as the Bulldogs shot 61% from the floor to Newberry’s 41%. Newberry dominated man play as the Indians had 13 steals in the half to Wingate’s four. However, Newberry struggled on ball control as the Indians had 13 turnovers while the Bulldogs had 19 in the half.

Sammy Monroe was a potent force for the Indians in the first period, putting up 16 points for Newberry. Bryan Grier, the conference leader in blocks, put up 10 points and three blocks.

Newberry returns to action next Wednesday, Jan. 18 as they travel to Clinton, S.C., to face the arch-rival Blue Hose of Presbyterian College. Wingate heads to Hickory, N.C., to take on the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College. Tip off for both games is set for 8 p.m.
