Wednesday, January 11, 2006 | by Indians fall short of upset victory at home

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Down by 19 early on, Newberry orchestrated a long rally to pull within three, 76-63 with 2:50 remaining in the game before Catawba's 75% shooting from the line in the second half held off the Newberry rally as the Scarlet and Gray Indians fell, 86-78 in South Atlantic Conference action. Alonzo Hinds led Newberry's way with 22 points.

The Catawba Indians (14-3, 2-0 South Atlantic) had five players scoring in the double digits with Jolly Manning paving the way with 19 points, nine of which coming from the stripe. Brian Graves added another 17, going 3-for-5 from downtown for the Catawba effort.

Newberry (5-8, 0-2 SAC) was down by 13 at the half, 44-31 and outscored Catawba 47-42 in the second period but were held back by shooting only 38.7% from the field. Newberry was in true fashion from the free throw line, shooting 72.7% as they are averaging 72.8% on the year, which is second best in the SAC and 39th in the nation.

Newberry outrebounded Catawba, 39-37 and had 14 steals to Catawba's 8 but Catawba shot 57.4% from the field and went 7-for-16 (43.8%) from downtown to keep Newberry at bay.

Newberry was down by as much as 19 early on in the first half before starting the difficult task of coming back against the team that was the preseason pick to win the conference. Newberry now must try to end their five game losing streak on the road this weekend, where they have yet to win a game (0-6).

Newberry returns to action Saturday at Wingate in another South Atlantic Conference clash with a newly announced start time of 8 p.m. Catawba, who is receiving votes in the most recent NABC Coaches Poll, heads to conference foe Tusculum for a 4 p.m. start time.
