Men's basketball falls, 56-53, at Erskine
Tuesday, January 3, 2006 | by 11-0 Erskine run seals Newberry's fate

DUE WEST, S.C. - A career-high 20 points from Newberry guard Sammy Monroe (Mt. Olive, N.C.) was not enough to turn back a late-game surge by Erskine College as the Flying Fleet nipped the Indians, 56-53, at Belk Arena.

Newberry (5-6) made only two field goals in the final eight minutes of the game, while Erskine (3-4) constructed an 11-0 run over the final 2 1/2 minutes to secure the come-from-behind win.

With Newberry leading 48-43 with seven minutes remaining, both teams shifted to halfcourt sets and used most of the shot clock on each possession.  The technique worked in the Indians' favor for nearly five minutes as they grew the lead to eight.  Zach Chandler (Greenville, S.C.) made three of four foul shots, Michael Dease (Bennettsville, S.C.) banked in a running floater, and Monroe came through with an offensive board and subsequent putback during the run.  The visitors led 53-45 at the 2:30 mark.

Enter Erskine's hot streak.  The Flying Fleet made six of its last seven shots, a pair of those from beyond the arc and three of four from the charity stripe.  Newberry missed five straight shots but still had a chance to tie with 0.4 seconds on the clock.  The inbounds pass came to Monroe in the corner, the shot was released in time, but it was not to be.

Eight players scored for Erskine in a balanced attack.  Leading the way was Craig Williams (Paris, Ky.) with 12 and Matt Odom (Six Mile, S.C.) with 10.  Monroe was the only Indian in double figures.

Newberry was haunted by low shooting percentages, especially in the second half when the team went 0-for-10 from three-point land and 5-for-11 from the foul line.

The first half was nip and tuck with three lead changes and a tie.  Newberry took a 28-25 lead into the locker room.

South Atlantic Conference play begins this weekend, as Newberry travels to Carson-Newman for an 8 p.m. tipoff Saturday.  Erskine hosts Limestone on Thursday.
